Team Saskatchewan picked up their third win in a row at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship with a 10-2 win over Terry Miller and Team Yukon Tuesday afternoon at the Swift Current Curling Club.

The hometown rink of Shaun Meachem, Kelly Schafer and Chris and Teejay Haichert opened the scoring with a deuce in the first end and then forced Yukon to a single in the second. After another deuce and force in the third and fourth, Saskatchewan came out of the break with three in the fifth end and a steal of three in the sixth to wrap it up.

“It was nice to come out here today, because it’s our one-game day, and just make sure that we’re throwing as best as we can as well,” Schafer said after the game. “They had the two misses, but it’s nice to make sure we put our stones in the positions that we need them as well.”

The team is representing Saskatchewan at the Canadian Mixed Championship for the third time in four years, with Kelly, Chris and Teejay making their fourth appearance at the event. Schafer, who also played for Saskatchewan at the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, says playing for a national championship at her home club is a unique experience.

“We’ve got so much support, like every day that Saskatchewan’s played, we’ve had support out on the ice, upstairs, downstairs… we can feel the fan support,” she added. “I’ve always said we have fantastic ice here in Swift Current, so when you can get good ice, it makes for good curling. That’s what keeps players happy, and for me, it’s great to play at home and just have everybody around.

“I don’t think we could have put on a better event for a curling club,” Schafer added. “Most big events are in arenas and I think we’ve got that arena feel here in Swift Current.”

Saskatchewan is now in a tie with Nova Scotia for second in the Pool A standings at 3-1 and will be idle until Wednesday morning when they face first-place Ontario before facing Northern Ontario in the last draw before the championship and seeding rounds start on Thursday.
