Tough Game 2 ahead for Estevan in the McLeod Series

After a split decision defined Game 1, Estevan is looking to win it all in Weyburn. 

The 87th McLeod Series now shifts to Weyburn for Game 2 of the long-awaited matchup. The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles narrowly leads the series over the ECS Elecs 134-133. With only one day to prepare for the contest due to a weather delay last week, all teams are under the wire. 

"We're going to take the same game plan. Tommy Olsen's their best player, we need to shut him down and keep him in check. We need to play really, really good defense against everyone else because like I said, defense will win us basketball games. The points will come because we are a good shooting club," said ECS Senior Boys Basketball Head Coach Trevor Dutka. 

The Elecs Sr. Boys team took to the court first and managed to eek out a 76-71 win over the Eagles. Dutka admits the coaching staff knew it was going to be a tight game. 

"If you were here watching the game, sometimes guys bumped into each other, fouled, and they were shaking hands. We're very close communities and I think the players on the benches respect each other so I'm happy about that. I mean it was an intense game and a lot of fun."

A tough contest left the Eagles Sr. Girls team coming out on top against the Elecs, ending the bout with a score of 63-57. Elecs Sr. Girls Head Coach Jessie Smoliak is proud of the young squad, mostly consisting of Grade 10s. 

"It's really exciting to see the future that we have and that was the first McLeod series that the majority of my team played in. We only had three returners who actually played in it previously. I was really proud with how mature my Grade 10s reacted to how loud the gym was and how much pressure was on them to potentially win that game."

She hoping to up the team's defense game in advance of Game 2. 

Weyburn Comprehensive School hosts the second half of the McLeod Series tonight, starting with the girls' teams at 5:30pm and the boys' team following shortly after.
