Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture has released its first crop report of the season.

Cropping Management Specialist Shannon Friesen says cool, wet, snowy weather has delayed spring field work.

She says the majority of producers with crop still in the field from last year have so far been unable to finish harvest.

"It's estimated that there are about 1-million acres left over from last years," Friesen said. "The bulk of that is in the west central region as well as the northeast area of the province, but of course those areas tend to be some of the wettest this spring as well."

Friesen also said farmers around the southern half of the province are just getting started.

"So far 1% of the provincial crop is now in the ground, 3% has been seeded in the southeast and 2% in the southwest," she said. "There is very little if any of the crop in the ground in the central part of the province as well as the north. In some cases it may be a couple of days or even a couple of weeks before most of those producers can get into the field."

Seeding is off to a slow start in the southern half of the Province due to the weather but that should change in the next couple of days.
