Aeration systems are used to pump fresh air into small, shallow lakes or reservoirs that have healthy fish populations throughout the winter months

However, because the air bubbles to the surface, there is often thin ice and open water near an aeration system.

Murray Colt with the Environment Ministry explains that it's important to use extreme caution, pay attention to warning signs and stay clear of the posted areas.

Colt adds that changing temperatures combined with the amount of snowfall and slush can also contribute to unsafe ice conditions. As a result, it is important to use extreme cautions when travelling on the ice this winter.
