Some of the best young ball players from across Western Canada will be showing off their skills on the diamonds of Estevan this weekend.

The city is hosting the 2022 Western Canada Double A Baseball Championship. Here's what you need to know:

  • The tournament starts this Friday and runs until Sunday
  • There will be three divisions with three age groups: 13U, 15U, and 18U
  • There will be 15 total teams: 3 Estevan Brewers host teams and other teams from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and BC.
  • Games will be played at Cactus Park and Lynn Prime Park

"It's a major event for Estevan," said Mel Murray, the maintenance manager with Estevan Minor Baseball. "We haven't had a Western Canada Championship since 2008, and back then it was a fantastic success. It's going to be some great baseball and tons of people are coming to Estevan for it."

The festivities start with a barbecue Thursday evening at Lynn Prime Park, followed by the opening ceremonies under the lights. First pitches will fly on Friday morning.

"I know we've taken up 320 hotel rooms...we have over 700 coming for our barbecue supper tomorrow night," Murray said. "So there's a lot of people coming...all the way from Victoria, BC. Vancouver's coming, Edmonton's coming."

Murray said this is premier event that will rival the Centennial Cup hockey tournament that Estevan hosted in the spring.

"This is Western Canada's top notch tournament," he said. "We're privileged to get the event...in fact they phoned us and asked if we'd be interested because they know we've hosted it before and we've done a great job."

Estevan also hosted the event in 2004.
