There's a new face in Estevan and at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Dr. Alexander Arthur moved to Estevan earlier this month and has begun work as a physician. While he'll primarily be serving as a family doctor, he said he also has an interest in addictions and women's health.

"The people have been very welcoming, everyone seems very friendly," Arthur said. "I read about Estevan being the energy city, and when I think of energy I think of it like oil that is buried underground, but I also see that people here have kind energy in their hearts."

"I feel like this is like a home to me now."

Originally from Ghana in West Africa, Arthur moved to Waterloo with his family to prepare to take the Canadian medical exams. He arrived in Estevan on Aug. 2, and said his family will be joining him later this year.

"I like the mix of doing clinic work and also getting to do ER shifts at the hospital, said Arthur, 35. "And the fact that there's so many leisure activities for kids. I have two kids who will be joining me soon. Even though it's not a big city, it has everything in it."

He said he's had a lot of support in settling in to southeast Saskatchewan.

"It's been a whirlwind, but I've had a lot of support to make integrating very easy," Arthur said. "There's so much to do to have that work-life balance and enjoy the town."

Arthur lives near Padwick Park area and said he enjoys going to the gym, and playing tennis and golf outside of work. He's also learning to speak French.

As for the cold Saskatchewan winters, Arthur said he'll manage.

"My kids are giving me the motivation because they love the winter and they're always telling me I'm a scaredy cat," he said.
