The Estevan Bruins' season is approaching quickly, with just a few weeks until their regular-season starts and some preseason games over the coming days.

They're training hard for this season coming up, and the team is also making a few changes as those games get closer.

That includes two trades: 20-year-old Caleb Petrie to the MJHL Waywayseecappo Wolverines, and fellow 20-year-old Erik Boers to the Yorkton Terriers.

Head Coach Jason Tatarnic spoke a bit about the thought process behind letting the two players go.

"During training camp, we kind of as a staff made our choice of the 20-year-olds we wanted to keep, so unfortunately for Caleb Petrie that meant he was moved," said Tatarnic, "Caleb's a great kid, we appreciate everything he did for us, very hardworking kid on the ice, and sometimes as coaches, we have to make tough decisions and that was a very tough decision."

As for Boers, he had indicated to the team that he was going to go to school during the season and ended up being looked at by another team.

"I know a team inquired about Erik, we gave him permission to talk to them, and Erik indicated to them that he'd probably give it a shot to play for them," said Tatarnic, "Once Erik made the decision that he'd like to go to Yorkton we proceeded with the trade agreement. it's unfortunate that they're not with us anymore but at the same time they're two individuals that still get to play hockey at this level, so that's a positive."

From Boers trade to the Terriers, the Bruins also received a 2nd round draft pick.

Tatarnic says that for now, they don't have any bigger plans for that piece.

"It's a pick that we can use for our draft, and it's a pick that you can use for a transaction down the road," said Tatarnic, "But as of right now it's a pick that we just want to use in the draft."

The team is currently set to play Sunday and Tuesday in two preseason games, facing off against long-time rival Weyburn.
