The Estevan Humane Society is gearing up for a busy fall season, with one particular pet at the forefront.

Tayja Lakusta, President of the Board of Directors, says her team usually starts getting a lot of calls about cats as the weather starts to turn.

"People start reaching out because it's getting to be winter, they see cats outside and they don't want them suffering in the cold."

Lakusta says they simply don't have enough room to house all of the cats.

"We house as much as we can, but we have an endless list of (cats) waiting to be brought in," she said.

The shelter is trying to create more space for cats by encouraging people to adopt a new pet. They are running a promo in October where anyone can adopt a cat for $50.

"Basically any cat in the building, kitten, grown, adult, senior, everything is fifty dollars for their adoption fee for the month to try to clear out some shelter space to help those calls coming in because right now we can't, because we have nowhere to put them."

The Humane Society also offers foster with intent, so that anyone can take an animal home for two weeks to see if they fit in with their family.

The shelter is open five days a week and you can get in touch at 306-634-3444.
