The Estevan Police Service is involved in a province-wide firearm amnesty program that kicked off earlier this week.

The program aims to address gun violence in Saskatchewan and is a joint initiative between Saskatchewan RCMP, the provincial Ministry of Environment, and municipal police services.

From March 21-April 10, anyone can hand over their unwanted firearms, replica or imitation firearms, parts of firearms, or ammunition. During this period police will not pursue any charges related to unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Police say the guns will be checked to determine if they are linked to any crimes, then destroyed.

You can contact the Estevan Police Service to make arrangements. Officers will pick up the firearms and ammunition from people's homes. Police also ask everyone participating not to transport the guns themselves, saying it's a safety risk and could lead to criminal implications.

Police services in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Estevan, Weyburn, File Hills First Nations, and Wilton are all participating in the program.

Estevan police can be reached at 306-634-4767.
