Estevan Police Service gives update on 6th Street homicide

The Estevan Police Service has provided more information about an ongoing homicide investigation.

Police were called around 6:38 Wednesday morning for a call of a medical emergency to Apartment A 1206 6th Street.

The information police received was that an adult female was injured and bleeding. Police attended and found 46-year-old Karie Ann Guillas suffering serious upper body injuries.

She was transported by EMS to St. Joseph's Hospital in Estevan where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at 9:28 a.m.

The cause of death was deemed a homicide. Police Chief Rich Lowen confirmed that the injuries were consistent with that of a stabbing. He was not able to disclose who made the call to emergency services.

Police arrested an adult male - Karie Anne's son Justice Guillas - at the scene and transported him to the Estevan Police Station. The investigation into the homicide is ongoing. Police stated there are no outstanding suspects in relation to the homicide, and there is no risk to the public.

"During the course of the homicide investigation, an altercation took place at the Estevan Police Station between the suspect and an EPS officer resulting in serious injuries to both the officer and the suspect," said the police release.

"Both the officer and the suspect were transported to hospital for treatment. Both the involved officer and the suspect were transported to Regina for treatment and the officer’s condition has been updated to stable.

"As the incident is an officer-involved shooting, SIRT has assumed conduct of the investigation at the station and any further requests for information will be directed to SIRT."

Justice Guillas was pronounced deceased at the Regina General Hospital Wednesday afternoon.
