Estevan is set to play host to the U13B softball provincial championships next weekend, for the first time since 2018.

21 teams will come to the city with over 200 girls taking part in the tournament.

Rebecca Foord, an organizer for the tournament and Estevan Minor Softball board member talks about the upcoming games.

"On July 12th to 14th, Estevan Minor Softball in conjunction with Softball Saskatchewan is hosting the U13B Provincial Softball Championships. The games run starting at 8:00 A.M. on Friday until 2:30 P.M. with a championship game on Sunday. We'll have opening ceremonies on Friday at 6:00 P.M. Estevan Elite Girls, our very first game is early in the morning at 8:00 A.M. on Friday morning and then they play again at 6:30 P.M. on Friday night."

Foord is hoping the weekend goes well with the event's biggest need being volunteers.

"The biggest thing right now is we're looking for volunteers for our tournament. There are about 150 slots that we need filled. We've already got about 50, so there are a hundred slots that we probably need filled right now. Just working in the canteen, the gate, helping with scorekeeping, groundskeeping, just things like that and we really need the community involvement in order to make this a successful weekend."

Foord says she's excited for the weekend and is hoping to see some great games.

"It's a really exciting weekend. U13 Softball is getting really, really big in the province, softball is getting really big in the province, and to see 200-plus girls coming to our community to be able to play competitive softball is absolutely incredible. I think we all know the statistics for girls and sports are quite low. So it's really incredible to see this many kids coming to play a sport that they all love and they absolutely thrive at."
