Estevan students competed against those from across the province during the 2023 Skills Canada Saskatchewan Competition in Saskatoon.

The event had eight students from Estevan Comprehensive School participating in Hairstyling and Aesthetics as well as Information Technology sectors.

The competitions included Bridal Hairstyling, Braiding, Aesthetics, Photography, and Information Technology Software.

James Dobos, a teacher at ECS, says the students loved the event.

"Our students enjoyed an enriching experience, putting material learned in the classroom into practice. They also had to adapt to the criteria outlined by the coordinators for each of the competitions and utilize important career skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork."

The event took a ton of coordination between a lot of people, with Executive Director Jayden Leister thanking them for their support.

"We've had a lot of great support from the different education establishments that have been getting their competitors trained and ready. Partners that have helped us fund this event. Different volunteer groups that have really invested a lot of time into helping, making sure that the competitions are going to run smoothly. So there's been a lot of work, but we're really excited for today."

From what Leister heard afterward, plenty of people were happy with the competitions and with what was being shown off.

"A lot of the feedback I'm getting is "Wow, this is so cool. Like I never knew that this was a thing. I didn't know that I could maybe do this one day." So just seeing the excitement on their faces, "Oh, we have a 3D game art. Oh, we got to go check that out. They got this, They got that. Like, let's go see it." Just their excitement is incredible."

ECS student Alyssa Saccary won the Bronze Medal in the Bridal hairstyling competition.
