As September starts, many hockey clubs are preparing for the year ahead, with hockey camps being held for minor hockey players to get back into form.

This year though, there'll be a new face coaching on one of Estevan's teams - though people familiar with Estevan hockey may recognize him.

Kaelan Holt played with the SJHL Estevan Bruins a couple of years ago and has grown up playing hockey in and around Estevan.

He even played on the team that he's coaching now, the U15 AA Estevan Bruins.

He says that his experience giving back to the community started on a golf course.

"I think playing there at one point and going through the Bruin program and being back in Estevan full time I wanted to give back to the community a little bit. I'd seen (the coach at the golf course one day and kinda chatted about it and decided to help out so that's how it all happened.

"I got a good job at the treatment center here in town it's something I really enjoy and it's something I'm passionate about so I kinda thought I'd stick around," said Holt, "I knew I wanted to help out with hockey somewhere and the opportunity arose."

Holt says he's hoping the kids he coaches will learn just as much from the sport as he did.

"It teaches you hard work and teamwork, two huge things that are important no only in hockey but also in life as well," said Holt, "There's a lot of lessons to be learned, a lot of adversity to get through as a hockey team and that's probably a couple of the biggest things I learned from hockey."

He'll be focusing on teaching skills to the kids, which should be helped by some of the experience he has working with younger players.

"I've always helped out younger players. I've had a little brother and stuff like that when I've kinda helped out their team and when I was playing on the Bruins I'd be going out with younger teams so I did have a little bit of experience," said Holt, "But full-time coaching will be a bit different from what I'm used to."

While the team doesn't start playing until later on in the month, Holt says they're likely to have a full, regular season.

"It's been quite the long off-season, so all the kids are all pretty excited," said Holt, "All the kids are working hard and I think it'll be a fun season."
