The Saskatchewan NDP will make history Sunday afternoon.

By this evening, a woman will be the leader of the party for the first time in its history.

Carla Beck and Kaitlyn Harvey are the two candidates vying for the position, which came open when Ryan Meili announced he was stepping down back on February 18th.

Beck is the MLA for Regina Lakeview and has held the seat since 2016. She is a registered social worker and has been endorsed by six of the current 11 NDP MLAs. She has also been endorsed by 10 former NDP MLAs.

Harvey describes herself as a Metis community organizer, lawyer and climate justice activist from Saskatoon. She has a Juris Doctorate degree and a bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Saskatchewan. She has been endorsed by two current NDP MLAs.

The leadership convention will start at 1:00 p.m. at the Delta Hotel in Regina. The results are expected to be announced at 3:40 p.m., with the winner making their acceptance speech shortly after.
