A new Executive Director for the United Way Estevan is looking to show her support for the city.

Heidi Heisselink is coming into the position with a good amount of excitement, being able to serve the community through the non-profit.

She says that she's confident in her ability to bring the experience she's gathered over the years into Estevan.

"I grew up in Estevan, I have a great love for the community, I've been here almost all of my life," said Heisselink, "Serving the community has been a very important aspect of what I do, I've volunteered with many different organizations within the community, but also around Saskatchewan and even national committees."

Heisselink also continues to give back to the community outside of charity work - whether that be through education or teaching others methods for wellness.

"Working for a non-profit was sort of a no-brainer for me," said Heisselink, "Really as soon as I saw the opportunity it felt like a great fit for me. I've also worked as a teacher within Estevan for the last 20 years, and so have lots of connections in the community. I volunteer with yoga still, so strong connections to the community."

One of the first big events on Heisselink's plate is the United Way Telethon, which is currently scheduled for the middle of October.

She isn't too worried, as she has lots of experience with the event, albeit as a volunteer.

'I'm very excited for the telethon. I have been a part of larger events in Estevan in the past, being one of the organizers in the Southeast, and there's something really electric about being a part of a short-term event where everyone's working together for a common goal," said Heisselink, "I'm very much looking forward to being part of the Telethon, looking forward to working with everyone and making yet another successful event in Estevan."

Above all, Heisselink puts emphasis on helping out the community whenever you can.

"Community is important. Working together is important. Supporting each other is important," said Heisselink, "The more we do that the stronger we are as a community, and also that sense of community, that sense of knowing that you're a part of your community is also very rewarding and filling."
