April is National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month, and here in Saskatchewan, residents are being encouraged to sign up for the provincial online registry. The registry, which was launched in September of 2020, has seen nearly 18,000 Saskatchewan residents sign up so far.

"I'm pleased the Saskatchewan Organ and Tissue Donor Program is back up and running in full force for 2022 and will receive special focus and attention this month," Health Minister Paul Merriman said.

April 7th will also see people donning green for Green Shirt Day. This is a national event to honour the legacy of Logan Boulet of the Humboldt Broncos. He inspired over 150,000 Canadians to become registered organ donors in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy in 2018.

"We encourage people to participate in the planned activities this month to help us raise awareness, register as organ and tissue donors but be sure to have that very important discussion with their families so their wishes are known," SHA organ and tissue donation co-coordinator Kimberly Berscheid said.

You can find more information on becoming an organ and tissue donor in Saskatchewan on the registry’s website.
