The power is still out for much of southeast Saskatchewan this morning as the effects of the winter storm that started yesterday continue to be felt.

With widespread outages in the region affecting thousands of customers, conditions were deemed too hazardous for crews to continue working last night. This was thanks to the high winds, the precipitation and the darkness. SaskPower advised they were instructing crews to stand down for the remainder of the night and would resume work to restore power in the morning as conditions improved.

Communities affected by the outages include Estevan, Stoughton, Carlyle, Moosomin, Wawota, Kipling and more.

While SaskPower crews work on the outages, many people in the southeast corner are also dealing with less-than-ideal highway conditions.

This morning, a number of highways are closed in southeast Saskatchewan, including the TransCanada from Whitewood to the Manitoba border, as well as Highway 13 east of Carlyle, and Highway 48 east of Highway 35.

Emergency crews are also dealing with a collision on the TransCanada near Broadview that has closed traffic in both directions.

Environment Canada is expecting the conditions to improve throughout the day today, including the wind starting to die down and precipitation tapering off.
