Tryouts for the South East District tennis teams are scheduled for next Saturday, with a few practice sessions leading up to the event.

The South East District team is looking for eight athletes aged 11 to 14. Four boys and four girls will be chosen to take part in singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles, and mixed doubles.

“We would like to fill out the roster so we can have the full eight athletes going to the games,” said Arnold Betzma, president of the tennis club and coach for this year’s Sask. Summer Games.

He noted that kids trying out for the team do not require a lot of prior experience to try out.

“Hopefully, they’ve played one racket sport, be it badminton, racquetball, pickleball or ping pong. There will be lots of good training available to get them prepared for the game.”

Practice sessions are being held at the Estevan Tennis Court, located at 701 Souris Avenue, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the following days:

  • Tuesday, June 18
  • Wednesday, June 19
  • Friday, June 21

“They will learn how to hold the racket properly, how to make a proper forehand shot, a backhand shot, and learn how to serve, along with some strategies for playing singles and doubles tennis.”

Team selection will take place on Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“We will be selecting the team that evening, and we will want to make sure that everybody is committed to attending the games.”

Following selection the athletes will be measured for their team SE uniform.

“That way we can start more formal practices with the team to get them prepared. Gives us three weeks of time to practice, to be ready for the fames on the 21st of July.”

“We really want people to not be afraid, come out and try it. It is a game that has a higher learning curve, but once you start to play, it’s a great deal of fun.”
