The Estevan Police Service has charged a suspect they believe was behind the theft of a vehicle last week.

Dakota Button, an 18-year-old male, received three criminal code violations from the Estevan Police.

The Regina Police Service has also arrested an 18-year-old Dakota Button recently - it has yet to be confirmed that the two are the same.

Nine criminal code violations were set out for Button by the Regina Police Service, relating to firearm and theft charges.

RPS said Button made his first court appearance Monday afternoon. Below is the release from the RPS. RPS was not able to say whether the Dakota Button they charged was the same person arrested by the EPS.

Two adult males are facing a total of eleven charges after investigation early this morning (Monday) into a stolen auto.

At approximately 2:43 a.m. on Monday, December 12, 2022, a police Canine unit reported seeing a unique-looking vehicle, which matched the description of an earlier-reported stolen vehicle.  The yellow Kia Seltos was initially spotted in the area of Dewdney Avenue and Broad Street and then later seen in the 800 block of Elliot Street.  It appeared the vehicle had been abandoned, but as a different Canine unit approached, two male suspects exited the vehicle and started running.  The Canine officer gave warning several times, but the males continued to run.  The Canine officer sent his dog to apprehend the driver and radioed a description of the second male suspect to other units.  The dog pursued the driver and detained him (making contact by bite) until the officer was able to successfully arrest the male.  The second suspect was arrested in the area as he attempted to flee in a cab.  It’s alleged this individual was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun and shotgun ammunition.  Both males face criminal charges as a result of the investigation.

Twenty year-old James Elias Jeremiah CYR, of the Punnichy District, is charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (vehicle), s. 355 (a) CC; and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (licence plate), s. 355(b) CC.

CYR made his first court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. (today) on Monday, December 12, 2022.

Eighteen year old Dakota Dillon James BUTTON, of Regina, is charged with:

  • 2 X Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition, s. 117.01(1) CC;
  • Possession of a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace, s. 88 CC;
  • Careless use of firearm, s. 86(1) CC;
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, s. 91(1) CC;
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle, s. 94(1) CC;
  • Possession of a loaded firearm, s. 95(1) CC;
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 (vehicle), s. 355 (a) CC; and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (licence plate), s. 355(b) CC.

BUTTON made his first court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. (today) on Monday, December 12, 2022.
