SGI is starting to accommodate individuals with diverse gender expressions of those who do not wish to disclose an option on their driver's license.

Tyler McMurchy Manager, Media Relations of SGI, "So SGI customers do now have the flexibility to choose a non-gendered option if they identify as male, female, or simply if they prefer not to say and do not want to select an option. Anyone of any age can simply go to a motor license issuer anywhere in Saskatchewan and request the change and it will be made free of charge."

"A little background of this, in May of 2018 the Saskatchewan Court of Queens Bench ruled that the government was required to issue a birth certificate without a sex designation. Now while this ruling did not specifically mention identification by SGI, we are taking the view that it would apply to all government issued identification. So we're pleased to offer this alternative, and allow customers to decline specifying a sex designation if they choose to." As a provider of government-issued identification, SGI's move towards offering an X designation along with the binary designation options is in keeping with that ruling.

No documentation is required to change to an X designation McMurchy goes on to say, "So a customer can go into any motor license issuer with their current SGI identification and request the change. They will be issued new identification free of charge. The paper version will be issued on the spot, a new id card will be mailed to them usually in a couple of weeks." This is not yet Canada-wide nor international. Not all organizations, businesses, and government agencies have adapted their practices or policies. As a result, SGI cannot guarantee that a Saskatchewan-issued driver's license or photo identification card with an X designation will be accepted by other organizations. Customers who request an X designation will be informed of these considerations.
