Winter Storm Watch Turns to Blizzard Warning

A winter storm watch put into effect Sunday by Environment Canada turned to a blizzard warning Tuesday morning.

Blowing snow is causing "zero visibility" on highways around Estevan and Weyburn, leading to a "travel not recommended" status for highways including 39, 33, 18, and 13 on the Highway Hotline.

Drifting snow is also being reported in the area.

Highway 1 was closed from Swift Current to a little east of Regina, but has since reopened.

Environment Canada said in its statement that "travel is expected to be hazardous due to the reduced visibility."

Winds should ease up somewhat during the afternoon, leading to improved conditions.

Gusts from the northwest up to 80 kph should decrease to 70 kph early Tuesday afternoon, and 50 kph Tuesday evening.

Wednesday winds should be around 30 kph.

"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions," read the statement. "If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone."
