Lampman's Raegan Walter will find out soon enough whether or not she's the recipient of the Young Visionary Award.

Walter, an 18-year-old Grade 12 student at Estevan Comprehensive School, has been nominated for the award as part of the Southeast Saskatchewan Women of Distinction Awards, alongside her friend Kylie Phillipchuk.

"I'm glad that it's between me and Kylie Philipchuk because her and I are friends, I've known her and I'm really happy with whoever gets it," said Walter, who now lives in Estevan. "It would be such a great honour just to be recognized for that in our area."

The award honours women across the southeast who have made positive contributions in their communities. Walter said she was nominated by one of her high school teachers.

"It has meant a lot to me. It is really nice to know that these awards are back and they support the women in the area that have done all these amazing things," she said. "I'm just really honoured to be seen as one of those people. I was really shocked and honoured when my teacher asked me."

"Going to the (nomination) ceremony (last week) it just made me feel really empowered that I got to stand among all of these really amazing ladies from our area."

Walter, a competitive softball player, said the award criteria is based on athletic, academic and volunteering success.

"I have been volunteering my time helping out a local South East Sun Devils (U17) softball team, so I think that helped, the fact that I've been working with a lot of those girls and helping them out," Walter said. "And I've also been helping out some younger kids with their softball skills and spending my afternoons doing lessons with them and helping them out, just to become more successful in their sport and in their everyday lives."

"I aspire to be a role model for lots of young girls in the area, so I think that really helped. Along with my academic success...I have been on principal's distinction all three years and I should receive it again this year, which is something that also really helps with that award."

Walter added that she'll be attending West Texas A&M this fall to play college softball where she'll be majoring in psychology with a minor in sport psychology. She hopes to play softball at the national level one day.
