A half dozen Estevan Minor Football players were selected to play for the South Saskatchewan Selects Football team.
In February of 2018, Chayton Fornwald, Lucus Rooks, Hayden Borhot, Hunter Eagles, James Knibbs and Parker Lavoie will make the trip to San Antonio, Texas to play in the 6th Annual Pigskin Classic.
Through the process of applying and trying out for the Under 12,14 and 16 age categories, the six local boys will look to show off their talents against some of the best football players in the United States.
"I'm excited for the games," explained Chayton Fornwald, who will suit up in the Under 12 category. "I made it last year and it was a lot of fun, I'm just excited to see how much harder it's going to be compared to last year."
Although some of the players mentioned above will be making their second and third trips with the Sask Selects, it will be the first time for Parker Lavoie, who will throw on the jersey for the Under 16's.
"I'm looking forward to the coaching, going from bantam to Sask Selects is a big jump and I'm looking forward to making it," Parker Lavoie said. "I'm excited to meet the guys and make those bonds. Met some of the greatest guys through football, so it's going to be awesome traveling with the team."
Lavoie also shared when he found out the news of being selected and the reaction that followed.
"I was at musical practice at ECS, I was very happy and I let out a big scream and everyone cheered, it was awesome."
This is the sixth year that the Sask Selects program has traveled to the United States during the winter to square off with teams from across the neighboring country. They took part in a tournament in Florida last season.
“Out of the 36 kids that we originally took to Texas in our first year, six years ago, 24 of those kids have commitment letters and scholarship letters to a number of universities in Canada and one in the U.S., the program has become extremely successful and more parents are seeing the advantages of putting the kids in these programs,” said Zeljko Stefanovic, the program director for the Sask Selects.
