After an outstanding 2016 portion of the schedule, the Midget AA Apex Bruins kicked off 2017 over the weekend with two home games at Affinity Place.

On paper, the 2nd place Bruins were looking forward to what could have been an easy four points as they hosted the bottom two teams in the league standings. However, there's a reason the games are played on the ice as nothing comes easy.

The last-place Lumsden/Bethune Lions visited Estevan on Saturday night. After 60 minutes and an overtime period, neither team would be able to find the back of the net as the game ended in a scoreless 0-0 tie.

Estevan outshot Lumsden/Bethune by a whopping 53-12 total, but had to settle for one point. Goaltender Bryson Garton registered a shutout in the tie.

The AA Midgets were back on the ice on Sunday looking for two points. While it was closer than they would have liked, the Bruins came away with a tight 2-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds.

Jaiden Gervais gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead scoring in the first period and after Notre Dame scored in the second to tie the game, Dalton Schrader scored the game-winner with only 1:42 remaining in regulation.

The Midget AA Apex Bruins remain in 2nd place with a (19-4-2) record, two points back of 1st place Yorkton and just one point up on both Weyburn and Melville in a tight race at the top of the league standings.

The midgets hit the road next weekend for two games. On Friday, January 13th they have a rematch with Lumsden/Bethune and on Saturday they travel to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors.
