The Atom Estevan Bear Cats returned home from their tournament in Regina on Sunday as champions.

To get things started on Friday, the girls won a pair of games over the Regina Royals and Regina Tigers, by a combined score of 21-1.

"Very good, it was our first time in this Regina tournament and we were in the "C" division, we probably should have been in "B" but that was where they put us and the girls played well," explained Coach, Amanda Minchin. "Some of the younger girls got to score some goals and that's always a good thing."

On day two in Regina it was more of the same for the young Bear Cats team as they would cruise to wins over the Regina Rebels and Regina Tigers, by scores of 8-0 in both games. The four straight wins would solidify the Bear Cats spot in the championship game on Sunday, where they would go on to beat the Regina Royals 6-1 and capture the gold medal.

"It's a really fun age, you see a lot of development at this age. You get on the ice in September and you go through the months and you see how much they improve by Christmas. By March when you're wrapping up the year it's quite amazing how far they come. Coaching this age is a lot of fun, the coaches, players and the parents I think have been having fun."

The Atom Bear Cats were also treated to a tour of the University of Regina Cougars Women's dressing room, courtesy of Estevan's Mariah Mckersie who plays for the Cougars.

"She's from Estevan, her family lives in Edmonton now I believe, but she's a great young lady who works really hard and is a very good hockey player. She spoke to the girls and I think they were pretty amazed by the dressing room, they thought it was pretty cool how they had their equipment perfectly displayed. They were quite amazed by the big logo in the middle and how they weren't allowed to touch it or step on it. That's all the girls talked about for the rest of the weekend," Minchin concluded.

In their five tournament games, the Bear Cats outscored their opponents 43-2 leading to a 5-0 record.

The Atom Bear Cats resume regular season play on Monday, December 11th against the Weyburn Blizzards.
