One team at the top of the league, the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings, traveled to Wawota to take on a team that very well could be at the top of the league as well if they had a few more games under their belt in the Flyers.

The Flyers had lost their only game of the new year to the Midale Mustangs with a 2-1 score and had their only other game of 2019 so far against Bienfait moved to a later date. As for the Wheat Kings, they come into this game with a three game winning streak including a win the night before over Carnduff.

For the game's first goal, Brad Reige would score five minutes in for the Wheat Kings to put them up by one to take the game's first lead and his fifth of the season.

Just three minutes later it would be a tie game thanks to the stick of Justin Lamontagne.

That score would stand for a little while before the Wheat Kings would take the lead back once again thanks to Shelby Gray with just over five minutes to play.

After 1: 2-1 Yellow Grass

The second period would swing the score heavily in favour for Yellow Grass, but that wouldn't happen before Wawota tied the game up thanks to Taylor Ernst with 11:53 to go.

After that, the Wheat Kings would start to take control, starting with a goal from Brendon Vertefeuille just over a minute later. Reid Patterson would add another tally for the Wheat Kings to put them up by two.

Wawota would stop the run momentarily when Derek Frater would score his first of two goals of the game and his team leading 11th of the season.

The Wheat Kings would regain their two goal lead with 24 seconds left in the period when Mike Onstad would score for his team.

After 2: 5-3 Yellow Grass

The third period would tighten up offensively but there would still be a few notches added to the scoreboard. Six fourty-five into the period, Derek Frater would score that second goal of the game for his team to bring it back to within one, but that's as close as the Flyers would get.

Mike Onstad would score two more to complete the hat trick and finish the game off for the Wheat Kings on the road.

FINAL SCORE: Yellow Grass 7 - 4 Wawota

Yellow Grass pulls ahead of the Carlyle Cougars for the first place spot in the league, now having played just as many games played.
