HIGHLIGHTS:

The Wawota Flyers never trailed, but held on late for an important road win against the Midale Mustangs on Sunday evening.

Justin Lamontagne's second hat-trick in as many games against the Mustangs proved to be the difference in a 6-3 Flyers victory, who added an empty-net goal in the final minute to defeat Midale.

After a scoreless opening period, Wawota would get the first goal of the evening when their captain Rob West fired a powerplay tally past Midale's Derek Tendler to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. Wawota would add two more goals in the 2nd period courtesy of Lamontagne and his linemate Kent Sauter to take a 3-0 lead into the final period.

Lamontagne buried his own rebound early in the 3rd period for his second of the game to give Wawota a commanding 4-0 lead. Everything looked to be on cruise-control for the Flyers, but in the final ten minutes the Mustangs would make things interesting.

After Dustin Graham buried a loose puck at the side of the net to get Midale on the board, Adam Ziegler slapped a shot through the five-hole of Guillaume Blouin to suddenly get the Mustangs within two with just over five minutes left in regulation.

Midale would make it a one-goal game with 4:33 on a wild play. During a delayed penalty call to Wawota, Ziegler worked the puck up the ice for Midale and snapped a shot top corner to make it 4-3. On the play however, Steven Lindenbach was going hard towards the net and after the puck went in, collided with Blouin at the top of the Flyers' crease. After a short scrum, the referees gave a two-minute minor to Lindenbach for goalie interference.

On the ensuing powerplay, Wawota would halt the Mustangs momentum as Lamontagne sniped his third of the game for the hat-trick and gave the Flyers a 5-3 lead. Devin Stewart added an empty-netter to round out the scoring in a 6-3 Wawota victory.

Justin Lamontagne's three goals gives the Flyers forward 17 markers on the season, third in the Big Six behind Carnduff's Matt Audette (19) and Oxbow's Taysen Holt (18). Lamontagne finished second overall in goals scored last season with 23 goals, just one behind Redvers' Jordon Miller (24) in 2016/17.

Wawota (11-2-4) is back into sole possession of 2nd overall in the standings with the win, while Midale (9-7-0) remains in 6th overall spot.
