The Estevan Bruins won twice over the weekend October 19-21 against tough opponents, and they can thank goaltender Grant Boldt for playing a big part in the wins. The SJHL recognized Boldt as goaltender of the week for October 15-21.

Boldt, a native of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, won his first game in the SJHL against the Melfort Mustangs on Friday, October 19. He allowed only one goal on 24 shots against a Mustangs team that had been 7-3-1 entering action on that day.

The rookie goalie outdid himself the next night, however, facing the reigning SJHL champions, the Nipawin Hawks. The Hawks pressed desperately in the third period, but Boldt made several highlight reel saves, again allowing only one goal on 34 shots in a 4-1 Bruins victory.

"Grant's made a lot of headway," said Bruins head coach and GM Chris Lewgood. "We're not going to be afraid to use him when in doubt. He earned those goaltender of the week honours, he was excellent for us in those two games.

Boldt's saves on the weekend came in spurts as the Bruins carried play for long stretches against Melfort and in the early going against Nipawin. Yet Boldt never lost his focus.

"Sometimes it's hard for goalies when they're not tested a ton to play at the level he was throughout the weekend," Lewgood said. "There was times where he stood and watched for quite a while and then was tested with some significant flurries. He played well for us."

Boldt's season got off to a rough start as he was pulled in a loss to Humboldt during the showcase. Since that loss, however, he's allowed just four goals in three games for a miniature 1.25 GAA and a 9.47 save percentage in his starts.

In his two wins, Boldt's save percentage was .964. Overall this year Boldt has the best stats of any Bruins goalie with a 2.29 GAA, a .922 save percentage, and a 2-2 record.
