The Estevan Bruins played their second game in just eighteen hours on September 25 in Warman, and when they came out of the gate against the Humboldt Broncos, they looked like it.

The Broncos pumped four goals past Grant Boldt in the first period before he was pulled, then added two more on his replacement Jake Anthony in the second for a 6-2 win. Michael McChesney and Jayden Davis scored in reply for Estevan, who falls to 3-2 on the year.

Just as Kindersley did the game before, Humboldt started quickly, getting a power-play goal just 1:30 into the contest. Josh Patrician took a wrist shot from the point on the power play that found its way through a sea of bodies and past Boltd for a lead the Broncos never even came close to relinquishing.

Humboldt extended their lead as Michael Clarke fired home a shot on a 2-on-1 with Owen Guenter. Before the 13-minute-mark of the period, Humboldt had two more, one each from Jackson Kobelka and Zach McIntyre, McIntyre’s first of two, to end Boldt’s afternoon.

Boldt’s replacement, Jake Anthony, faired little better in the early second period, as Humboldt added goals from Daunte Fortner and another from McIntyre within the first five minutes and 17 seconds of the middle frame.

Estevan prettied up the score clock a bit as Jayden Davis came in on a partial break and finished high to the blocker side on Dane Dow. On a 5-on-3 later on in the period, Michael McChesney sniped one on the short side to get the Bruins to two goals.

The Broncos locked things down in the third, however, allowing just six shots on goal in the final frame and keeping the Bruins to the outside for most of the third. On the rare occasions the Bruins broke through, Dow was there.

With the loss, Estevan drops to 3-2 on the season. The Broncos, meanwhile, won their third straight to move up to 3-2 on the year. Estevan takes a day off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday night in Kindersley. That game will be broadcast live on Rock 106.

GAME NOTES:

Turner Ripplinger extended his point streak with two assists, but was ejected for a check from behind late in the third. He received five minutes and a ten-minute misconduct for his hit on Brayden Camrud.

Johnny Witzke also continued his point streak with an assist on McChesney’s goal. He continues to lead all SJHL defensemen in scoring.

The loss was the worst margin of defeat for Estevan since an 5-1 loss to Notre Dame back on February 14 of 2017. They drop two straight games for the first time in the 2018-19 season.

TJ Irey’s point streak was stopped, as was Isaiah Thomas’s in the loss.
