The list of undefeated teams in the SJHL shrank by one on Saturday night, as the Estevan Bruins hung the first loss of the season on the reigning league champion Battlefords North Stars.

It took overtime to do it, but the Bruins bounced back from Friday night’s setback in Kindersley in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 win. Zach Goberis roofed a backhander during three-on-three to send the visitors home with a win, as well as assisting on the opening goal by Michael McChesney.

McChesney opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. He extended his goal-scoring streak to four games and became the first shooter all season to beat North Stars goalie Taryn Kotchorek, who hadn’t surrendered a goal in two previous games.

Hayden Guilderson scored in the second period and set up the overtime winner as well. Matthew Chekay rounded out the scoring for the Bruins, tying the game late in the third with his first SJHL goal. Chekay tipped in a well-placed shot by Nolan Ferguson to send the game to extra time.

Layne Young had two tallies for Battlefords, who dropped to 2-0-1 on the season. Battlefords also got a goal from Connor McIntosh, and played in their second overtime game of the young season.

Estevan and Battlefords won’t have to wait long for a rematch, as they’ll play each other during the SJHL showcase during the week. Estevan will then return to the Energy City for a home-and-home against the Yorkton Terriers.
