Bruins fans, and those just out to enjoy food and entertainment alike were treated to it all on Thursday as the Estevan Bruins held their annual Sportsman Dinner in Affinity Place.

Once again, Rod Pedersen was the emcee for the event, while this year's guests were retired NHL referee Mick McGeough and the retired Jim McKenzie, known for his hard hitting and fighting nature on the ice. Pizza and wings, along with refreshments, were on the menu as attendees laughed at stories and took in the live auction.

"I try to come back as much as I can. My family still lives here, so to come back and have a night like this is great," said McKenzie, a Saskatchewan native.

"I grew up in Carlyle mostly, played in minor hockey, and my family moved here. My father's a now retired RCMP, so I came back every summer, they've been here for over thirty years. My brother and his family still live here, so this is my home away from home. It's always great to get back."

With rounds of auction interspersed throughout, McKenzie and McGeough took turns regaling the crowd with tales from their careers on and off the ice, some true and others left to the listener's discretion. This was followed by a Q and A period, where members of the audience could query the guests when the pair weren't playfully sparring at each other over top of Pedersen, who attempted to play moderator.

"I always got along with the referees, they're great guys, just guys trying to do their jobs when they're out there, and they have great stories too. (McGeough is) a super great guy, and it was really nice getting to know him," McKenzie said.

Among the items sold was a Roughriders jersey, and a Devils jersey signed by McKenzie, as well as a decorated fire helmet in honor of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

The total funds raised by the Bruins for the Broncos was also announced, a sum of  $95,336 that was pushed over the $100,000 mark by a generous community donor.
