The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins looked for a moment like they might not make it out of Kindersley with any point on January 31, but they walked away with two instead thanks to some late game heroics from Michael McChesney and a standout performance from Matt Lukacs.

HIGHLIGHTS

McChesney scored late in regulation to tie the game at 2, then again in the shootout to beat the Kindersley Klippers 3-2 in the shootout. Hayden Guilderson also scored, and Lukacs made 26 saves on 28 shots for the win.

The Bruins played through a scoreless first period before Guilderson broke the deadlock at 1:51 of the second. After a scrambly faceoff and some extended zone time, Guilderson potted the rebound of a Kaelan Holt shot to give Estevan the first lead of the hockey game.

Midway through the second period, in which the Bruins were in control after a tough first, Kindersley evened the score when Brody Ryberg rifled a shot low and hard toward the net and Curtis Peck tipped it home for his tenth of the year.

Ryberg struck again on the power play less than two minutes later, sneaking a shot from the point through traffic that eluded Lukacs. The two-point night gave the Kindersley native his 20th point of the season, and gave the Klippers the lead.

That lead lasted until just 1:10 remained on the clock, when McChesney took a pass from behind the net at the top of the right circle and let go an absolute bomb that was in and out of the net before Klippers goalie Justen Close even knew the shot had been released to tie the game.

Close stood on his head in the overtime session, during which the puck hardly ever left the Klippers zone. Estevan dominated play, not allowing Kindersley a single shot in overtime, but couldn’t solve Close.

The shootout left no doubt about which team had more skill, however. Lukacs stopped both Devon Cyr and Tanner Thompson, and McChesney and Goberis both scored five-hole to give the Bruins the quick win in the penalty shot contest.

Estevan now takes a day off before moving on to play Battlefords on Friday night. Catch that game on Rock 106 at 7:30.

GAME NOTES

Kaelan Holt added two assists in the game to move to 55 points on the year, one away from his career high. He sits second on the Bruins in both points and goals (25).

Matt Lukacs moves to 2-1 in shootouts on the year. His only loss came against Yorkton on November 29. He stopped both shooters he faced.

McChesney’s goal continues to establish a new career high as he moves to 24 goals on the year. He played through illness in the game as he was dealing with a throat infection that caused him to miss the previous game.

Kindersley earned a point in all four games against Estevan this year. They won twice, and lost in overtime in Estevan as well.
