The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins were one of many teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), and across Canada, busy during the annual trade deadline day on January 10th.

The date marks the final day to make roster moves for the remainder of the season. Teams with championship aspirations can get the one or two pieces needed to put them over the top, and rebuilding clubs can help speed up the process of becoming a contender once again.

This season, with the Bruins sitting in 3rd overall in the SJHL and first in the Viterra division by 12 points, hopes are high for the junior A team in Estevan to make a deep playoff run in the spring.

With that in mind, Bruins' Head Coach and General Manager Chris Lewgood did what he could to not only improve his team for 2017, but keep Estevan competitive for several years to come.

BRUINS FLIP SOBKOWICZ FOR PROSPECTS/FUTURES

The first transaction of the day saw Estevan complete a trade with the Melville Millionaires after forward Logan Foster was dealt to Melville on December 7th. It was announced that ('96) Teal Sobkowicz would be heading to the Bruins' to finalize the deal.

However, the Bruins' had other plans.

After attempting to acquire a veteran defenceman for Sobkowicz, the Bruins flipped the forward to the SJHL's Flin Flon Bombers for three pieces:

TO ESTEVAN

('99) G - Matthew Lenz

1st Round Pick in 2017 SJHL Draft from Flin Flon

Future Considerations

TO FLIN FLON

('96) F - Teal Sobkowicz

BRUINS ACQUIRE EVAN SCOTT FOR PLAYER DEVELOPMENT FEE

After being unable to obtain a defenceman for Sobkowicz, Chris Lewgood quickly looked for another way to bring in a veteran to his young, impressive group of blueliners.

Late on Tuesday night, he found one.

The Bruins' acquired 21-year-old Evan Scott from the Valley Wildcats of the Maritime Hockey League (MHL) for a player development fee.

"Evan's the type of player that we were looking for coming up on the deadline," stated Lewgood on Tuesday night. "Defensive-minded defenceman, adds some size and jam to our lineup, and an experienced guy who can take some pressure off of our young defencemen."

Scott played parts of three seasons with the Shawinigan Cataractes of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). After only playing 13 games for the Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) in 2015/16, Scott joined the Valley Wildcats (MHL) for this season.

In 32 games, Scott registered seven goals and 19 points along with 40 PIM for the Wildcats. He departs the team as the 4th leading scorer.

Scott is not expected to be in the lineup for the Estevan Bruins game on Wednesday (11th) in Melville against the Millionaires on Rock106.

Now with his roster set for a playoff run in 2017, Lewgood is feeling good about how it looks on paper and is ready to move forward full steam ahead.

"We now feel like our team is where it needs to be going forward. We've got a good mix of young and old, and a team that can compete this year and for years to come."
