1988, 1991, 1992. The only three years the Carnduff Red Devils and the Wilkie Outlaws faced each other in the provincial final. They were times when both teams were at the top of their league, either winning league championships or falling just short in the league final, a storied history between the two towns was present before this series even started. Wilkie had won the title in 88 and 92, while Carnduff's lone provincial B title came in the 91 win when they also beat out the Carlyle Cougars for the Big Six Hockey League title.

Starting the fourth edition in Carnduff, the teams would take a little time to feel each other out, trying to bring the puck in to set up a cycle within the offensive zone, and the first half of the first period would go by without anything marked on the scoresheet. Once the ten minute mark past, things would start to open up a bit as the Red Devils started to take control of the period a bit. Trevor Geiger would bring the puck down the left side of the ice and wire a wrist shot off the cross bar and over the glass, but the missed opportunity would not hinder their pressure.

On the forecheck, the Red Devils would cause a miscommunication between the Outlaws defence and Mark Moriarty would try to get the puck in deep for Carnduff. It would bounce off a defender's skate, and Brandon Trask would find the loose puck to the left side of the net, and Outlaws goaltender Jared Herle was far enough out of position against the post to allow Trask an easy tap in for the game's first goal, 12:36 into the game.

After 1: 1-0 Carnduff

All season long, it hasn't been uncommon to see Carnduff start slow before their offence explodes in the second period, so the mood in the rink was not ready for the period coming. Wilkie had won their league championship the night before making the seven hour bus ride to Carnduff, and needed the first period to stretch out their legs.

Just before the ten minute mark of the second, Wilkie tied it up. Rick Cey got the puck to the left side of Cody Dumaine behind his net, sent it around behind to the right for Rory Gregoire, and Gregoire sent it in front for Brett Harrison. Harrison had a defender coming right at him as he wound up, so instead of firing right away, he expertly put the puck between the legs and side stepped for the toe drag, then pulled the trigger and nailed the back of the net.

The offence would continue for Wilkie with 3:09 on the clock when Brett's brother Brock put one in from the same distance away, only on the other side of the slot, the assist coming from Garrett Cameron.

Then, before the end of the period, Carnduff would run into a touch of penalty trouble, and right away the Outlaws would capitalize. Seven seconds gone in the powerplay and 59 seconds left in the period, defenseman Will Rathje would get the puck off the draw and send it along the line for Derek Keller. He'd pass it back into the slot for Brett Harrison in the same spot as the first goal, and this time he would throw away the finesse and put all his power into the shot that found twine.

After 2: 3-1 Wilkie

The third period would start how the last period ended for Carnduff: a quick goal in their net. With only a minute and five gone, the Rick Cey would bring the puck down the right side of the ice on a three on two. He would cut in towards the corner and drop the puck back, freezing the defender as Gregoire picked the puck up and rifled it passed the blocker of Dumaine.

Now down by three, the Red Devils would start to push back, but not until the 12:09 mark in the period. Cycling the puck in the offensive zone, import player Jake McMillen picked up the puck for the Red Devils behind the net and looked up to find his captain Kody Martin streaking in with his stick wound up. One pass later, and a onetimer would bring the home town Red Devils back up to within 2.

Less than a minute later however, the Outlaws came riding back. Gregoire would send a pass off the side boards to the centre of the blueline for Rathje, and his point shot would slide through traffic, looking for a tip, but instead would sneak through unimpeded to the back of the net.

Not to be outdone, the Red Devils would come right back again, this time just over a minute after. The Red Devils would start the cycle this time around, and Preston Erickson would get control of the puck at the line, and with a heads up play, he'd slap a hard shot just wide of the net to the waiting stick of Jake McMillen, and he'd make an expert tip look easy as he tipped it around Jared Herle for the 5-3 goal.

One more notch would be added in the frantic three-minute span between 12:19 and 14:51 mark, this time again for the Outlaws. On the powerplay Rathje would again take a point shot from the centre of the blue line through a screen, but this time Brett Harrison's stick would get the tip, sealing the game with a hat trick on the road.

FINAL SCORE: Wilkie 6 - 3 Carnduff, Wilkie leads series 1-0.

Jake McMillen, while originally from Carnduff, played in the Sask West Hockey League with the Unity Miners against the Outlaws, and sat second in league scoring behind only Brett Harrison.

Cody Dumaine came into the game with the better of the two goals against averages. The Red Devils have only allowed six goals on three seperate occasions, the last time being a 6-4 loss to the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings in game one of their finals series but that was an empty netter with 4 seconds later.
