HIGHLIGHTS:

Home teams finished 3-for-3 on opening weekend in the Big Six Hockey League after the Carnduff Red Devils eased their way to a 7-1 victory over the Carlyle Cougars on Saturday night.

In the first game at the newly-renovated Fast Centennial Arena, the Red Devils had seven different goal scorers and completely shut down the Cougars' offence to kick off their 50th anniversary season with a bang.

The Cougars came into Saturday's game following a big win of their own, a 6-0 victory in Carlyle on Friday night against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines in front of a raucous crowd at the Carlyle Sports Arena. But the tables would be turned for Carlyle on Saturday in Carnduff.

The Red Devils opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, as Carnduff captain Kody Martin gathered his own rebound on a rush and executed a quick wrap-around to beat Carlyle goaltender Josh Hohn, making it 1-0.

Carnduff expanded their lead with a powerplay goal from Cody Moore before the end of the frame to go up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Red Devils would pull away in a dominating second period that saw Carlyle register only 3-5 shots on Red Devils netminder Cody Dumaine. Shawn Gallant, Brandon Trask and Austin Halladay potted goals for Carnduff as they increased their lead to 5-0 after two periods.

Carlyle would spoil the shutout early the 3rd period as Cougars' captain Ben Johnstone scored his third goal of the weekend to make it 5-1. But that's as close as it would get, with Jason Boyes and Mark Moriarty adding two more markers to make the final 7-1 for Carnduff.
