The Estevan Elecs Cheerleading Squad attended the Best Of The West Cheer And Dance Championships over the weekend.

The event was jam-packed with over 1400 athletes in attendance at the international trade center at Evraz place in Regina.

That didn't stop the Elects team from taking home the first place prize in the 9 through 12 intermediate division. And according to coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme, they weren't sure how tough the competition would be

"Its early in the competition year and we haven't seen a lot of our competition and there was a competition weekend prior that we didn't go to, so we heard the rumblings of who was really good, at this particular competition we were actually up against a team from Alberta as well so you just don't know what your going to get."

The girls worked hard and it paid off not only did they win their division but they also managed to get the highest overall score for any of the scholastic teams competing.

The win comes as a pleasant surprise for a team that was just aiming to do there best, Coach Kavmme

"the girls are pretty solid, the routine itself is really very good so we thought we would do ok, we would do well, we would hopefully place in the top three. So getting in first was a little more then we anticipated."

Coach Kvamme was extremely proud of the athletes and all they accomplished and went on to mention she loves coaching the team but couldn't do it alone.

Coach Kvamme " I do not coach alone I have a community coach whos one of my former athletes on my cheer team her name is Danica Freeze and shes put a lot of long hours into this right alongside me if not more at times. But we definitely need to mention Danica because we're both very proud of those girls."

If anyone wants to catch the cheer team in action they will be performing at the Mcloud series in Estevan this Wednesday.
