A prestigious honor has been bestowed on a dedicated member of the local curling club. CurlSask chose Frank Elberg as the recipient of the Scotty Richardson Memorial Award for the 2016-2017 season, recognizing him for his volunteer efforts with the sport in the area. He has competed, coached, and assisted with whatever is needed around the club, as well as serving as part of the executive.

He expressed that he is "humbled" by the nod.

"I'm pleased to get it, but I wasn't expecting anything like that. I curl because I enjoy the game, and I serve on the executive and do things that have to be done around club because I think that's everybody's responsibility. I don't do those things to get an award, I just think it's the responsibility of the curler."

He is happy to have been appreciated, and shared what he loves the most about curling.

"I like the competition, but I also like the social aspect of the sport, associating with a variety of people. I'm still good friends with the people I started curling with when I first came to Estevan. It's a lifetime sport and a chance to form friendships for a lifetime."

Elberg noted that he has been involved in the sport since an early age, 11 years old to be exact.

"I came from a small community just east of Bienfait. My dad was a curler, and so he asked me to go with him when I was eleven because I was always down at the rink anyway, so that's where it started and I just kept going."

He added that he plans to continue on with the sport as long as he is able.

Estevan Curling Club Manager Pauline Ziehl-Grimsrud also chimed in, expressing her pride.

"This is great recognition for Frank, the club and all the hard volunteer work that goes into making our organization successful. It's also a feather in the hat for all the volunteers. He has been a very important part of everything."

CurlSask will present the award at their Annual General Meeting in Saskatoon on April 29th.
