The Estevan Comp. Elecs senior basketball teams kicked off the 84th annual McLeod Series with a big win over their rivals down the road in Weyburn.

Starting off with the first matchup of the night, the senior girls took on the Weyburn Eagles at home, and after a back and forth 4 quarters, the Eagles took an 81 to 69 score, putting Weyburn ahead by 12 in the four game total point series.

Head Coach of the boys' team Trevor Dutka was present for both games, and says that the girls squad has come a long way in a short time showcased by their effort in Wednesday night's contest.

"The girls are young. You gotta understand that the girls have no grade twelves on the team, they're young, they're still learning, a lot of them it's their first McLeod Series so they did really well for what they have."

Game two would see a different result, a more defensive game between the boys squads. After their home tournament, the ECS boys team made a few changes to their systems since, and the changes have paid off.

The boys team offence started shooting more from behind the three point line while their defense held the Eagles to just 53, getting the win by 15 points.

"The boys played really well yesterday, defensively any time you hold a team to 53 points is great. Weyburn's got a good basketball team and we held them to 53 points so definetly our defense stepped up."

In the win, Jack McGeough led the team with a whopping 24 points for the Elecs, helping the teams from the ECS to bring a three point lead back to Estevan for next week's games.

Game times next week on Wednesday are 5:30 pm for the girls, and 7:30 for the boys.
