A member of the ECS Elecs football team seems to have caught the eye of coaches across the province, and especially Regina's first and only female football squad.

Shanelle Rioux regularly plays slotback for the Elecs, as well as taking the occasional punt return and spending time as defensive back. An opposing coach had taken notice of her and handed her name to the Regina Riots, who in turn got in touch with her coach and invited her to their fall camp that took place on Sunday.
"I was actually super excited to go. I've always kind of been interested in the Riot, and I had an awesome experience. The coaching was amazing, all the returning players were super helpful and also really encouraging. It was just a great group to be around," she expressed.

"In every single position I tried out at that camp, I was given a tip or something that I needed to improve on. There were so many little things that I will be taking back to this season (with the Elecs) from that camp alone."

"She's very athletic. She has good hands, and she's really tough," shared Elecs Head Coach Mark Schott, "She's very versatile, and she's extremely coachable, which is something that we really like within our athletes and players. I would expect more of that moving forward, because that's what she's given us the last season and a half so far."

Rioux heads into her grade 11 year with the Elecs. She also has next season to continue to make an impression at the high school stage, before punching up to the next level of football.

"I'm definitely hoping to find some team to play for, and maybe see where it takes me," she said, adding that the Regina Riot are certainly on her radar.

In the meantime, however, as one of the few females in the area engaged in the sport of football, Rioux looks forward to another season with her team.

"I honestly love the team so much. I've played with those boys for I guess 8 years now. Everyone's super encouraging, I always feel like one of them, never 'like an girl' or anything, and the coaching staff is always super encouraging towards me too."
