The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs cheerleading squad took home gold during the senior small-scholastic division 2 provincial cheerleading competition in Saskatoon over the weekend.

Competing against schools from Yorkton, Weyburn, Regina and Saskatoon, a score of 90.1 and 94.84 percentage of perfection was enough to push the Elecs to a 1st place finish and a grand champion title at the 12th annual competition.

"For me the best part is at the end of all of it, no matter what happened we are all so proud of each other that we actually did this," explained Grade 9, Cheyanne Tessier.

The girls put forward a performance for the ages according to Coach Bonnie Chepil-Kvamme, who has been with the team for a quarter-century.

"It was amazing, I thought that they had almost peaked too soon on the warm up mat, but they went out on the performance floor and nailed it again," explained Chepil-Kvamme. "Our percentage of perfection was 94.84. I've coached 25 years and have never received scores like this. Wow, amazing group of young women."

After the girls won provincials last year with a team filled with seniors, ninety percent of the team was brand new coming into this season.

"What made this team so amazing was the fact that every one of them was at every practice, even when they were sick they were here. It's a very strong group with a lot of ability to take critique, criticism and corrections. These girls would go home and watch the videos we sent them to become better athletes. It was a lot of work outside the gym, when they came together it was very cohesive."

With only six remaining members from last years team, Chepil-Kvamme wasn't quite sure what to think heading into the season, but the group of young girls blew her expectations out of the water.

"It came to them easily, they put the work in. It wasn't a stressful year for me, I knew they were going to do well, but I didn't anticipate we would do this well."

As for next year, Coach Chepil-Kvamme is already excited about what will come in the future for the group of Elecs that worked so well together in 2017-18.
