The Estevan Elecs senior boys basketball team competed in their first tournament of the year at the O'Neill Basketball Classic in Regina over the weekend.

Going up against a few teams that have seen some action this year, the Elecs just couldn't seem to hit their stride in their first few games as a team.

"It was a rocky start going 0-3 with double digit losses in all three," said Elecs Assistant Coach, Dustin Wilson. "Some that were a lot closer than the final score indicated, but it definitely wasn't the start we were looking for. As the tournament went on, we did see some better play from the team."

Wilson mentioned that two notable players were missing from the Elecs line up throughout the majority of the weekend.

"We missed John Sasi and Carter Davenport this weekend, there was some transfer issues with John Sasi and he was ineligible to play. Carter was only able to make one game due to the musical, and missing those two was big from a leadership point of view and their work ethic on the court. Missing those guys mixed with some injuries and it kind of dictated the weekend for us."

Despite being ineligible to play due to transfer issues, Wilson expressed that Sasi showed outstanding leadership skills off of the court during the tournament.

"We assumed that everything was moving along seamlessly and we got the news before our first game. He was dressed and ready to go and he wasn't able to play. We couldn't have asked for a better attitude, he sat on the bench for every game and was valuable talking to the guys, it was like having another coach on the bench. I give him props and hopefully it's the last time he has to do that."

Starting with a game on Tuesday night, the Elecs are hoping to have their two key cogs back in the line up, along with a healthy roster looking ahead.

"Moving forward there's obviously things we're going to work on, but having those guys back and others healthy should make a pretty big difference for us. There wasn't much left in the tank, moving forward conditioning is something we have to work on," Wilson concluded.
