Ahead of City Wide registration in the City of Estevan, the Estevan Broomball Association is hoping to grow their league with some fresh blood this season.

"We are hoping to get more bantam and midget players this year," explained board member Shelley Schroeder. "If we can get it growing from the grass roots level I know we would be pretty excited and I know the rest of the league would be too with more teams to play in Estevan."

"We hope that people embrace it a bit more, as well it's still one of the most cost effective sports for kids. We sure hope that come city wide we can get registration numbers up."

Estevan played host to broomball nationals this past spring and other than a team from Estevan not winning the event, it couldn't have gone any better.

"The spectators that came out were surprised to see the caliber of talent. Down east is a lot stronger than we are out here because they have so many teams that they consistently play against. We were proud of the showing that the Saskatchewan teams made."

"There wasn't a negative thing said about Estevan after nationals, it was all so positive. They loved coming here, so we want to do what we can to grow our numbers.

Recently Schroeder was made aware that Estevan was awarded community of the year by the Sask Broomball Association for the great job they did at hosting nationals. That award will be accepted on September 16th in Saskatoon at the annual general meeting.

"We didn't anticipate it. We didn't host nationals to get awards or accolades, but we are pretty excited we did get it," she concluded.
