It's been a long time coming for Estevan Lacrosse, but there will be a home game at Affinity Place this Sunday for the first time in nearly two years as the entire season in 2020 was shut down due to the pandemic. The 16U Estevan Volts will play host to the Regina 2 team at 3:00 this Sunday.

"It's very exciting," said floor scheduler and marketing director for Estevan Lacrosse, Rochelle Duncan. "There are a few more games for July but everything else is pretty much (on the road) right now. As soon as we got the word that games are going to be starting this past Sunday, the SSL has been putting a schedule together."

The year off was tough on a lot of players, and getting back into the swing of things will take some time, but the 16U Volts are excited to get going. They'll be the only youth team Estevan is able to field this year.

"Last year was a rough year," Duncan said. "We're hoping, as things start to open more, we can really bring on games and see our numbers start to go up. We did see some numbers drop this year just because most kids wanted to play games. I think some kids started joining again here because we've got that game play coming in."

Without games available for the younger teams, Estevan Lacrosse has been hosting practices and camps and even trying to expand into field lacrosse. The hope is that once next season begins and games are able to go right from the start, more players will be interested and will have more skill because of those practices.

"I am in talks with parents from the 6U and 8U teams about getting those little players out on the floor to play in the intermission of the game this Sunday," Duncan said. "There might be a little sneak peak of them and how hard they work."

From what Duncan has been told, the ice is expected back in at Affinity Place before too long, so there won't be another home game at Affinity Place. However, they will be allowed to have spectators at the one on Sunday.

"I believe the players will still have to wear masks," she said. "I don't know for sure on that, but they can have full contact... We'll be allowed to have 150 spectators at Affinity as long as they're socially distanced, and of course they'll have to have masks on."

Duncan added the Volts will play a game in Regina on July 13, so they'll have no restrictions in place for that game in terms of masks and crowd sizes.
