The Estevan Motor Speedway is looking back on another great season of high octane racing in 2017.

"It's always important when the weather cooperates, and I believe we only had one rainout, which is really good. Typically we have a couple rainouts in a season," shared President Byron Fichter.

"We did have some bad weather during our Dakota Classic Modefied Tour, which was our biggest race of the year, so that was a bit unfortunate."

However, in the end they were able to race that night, though at a later time so they could get the track prepped. Most of the crowd stuck around, showing southeast Saskatchewan's affinity for the sport.

Highlights from the year for Fichter included the efforts put in by the volunteers, including those involved in preparing the track. He noted that Estevan's racing surface was one of the best that he had seen all year.

"We're really fortunate, those guys work really hard. We race on Saturdays, and you can drive by and see them working there as early as Tuesday or Wednesday, getting things ready. They take their job seriously."

"Our Hobby Stock class continues to amaze every year. We had a couple guys separated by just a handful of points right till the bitter end. Anytime you can get a championship battle like that where guys are competing right till the last night, it's always fun and entertaining to watch," he added.

With the entrance of the 2018 racing season will come the entry level Sport Mod class.

"We're fortunate that a large percentage of our drivers and people involved are young, so to add another beginner class and give these guys avenues to grow up and be the future superstars on our track is amazing. I think that's something that our board takes a lot of pride in, really working hard on growing the sport in general," Fichter said.

"I'm just really excited to see how these couple things on the entry level side (Slingshots and Sport Mods) keep progressing. With our Slingshots, we started with having two or three cars. We had up to twelve at one point last year, and it sounds like that's going to continue to grow."

The Sport Mods will run in a similar vein to the IMCA Modifieds seen every night at the track. Basically running a hobby stock engine in a modified frame, with simpler suspension and larger spoiler, they will have a close look to the big boys and will help channel young racers up into the Mods.
