An outstanding rookie season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference was capped off with Rookie of the Year honors for Estevan's Megan LeBlanc.

In her first season with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology's Ooks, the Estevan native scored 9 goals, adding 6 assists in 22 regular season games. Megan is also a 1st year Personal Fitness Trainer Student.

"I think it went pretty well," LeBlanc said of her first season in the ACAC. "Coming into a new team is always a bit tough, but our team clicked well from the start."

After spending the 2014-15 season in Estevan, LeBlanc moved on to play in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League, for both the Notre Dame Hounds and Melville Prairie Fire. The jump from midget to college would be a difficult one for most, but the 18-year-old accepted the challenge and passed with flying colors.

"It was definitely a change, but if you just time manage well you'll be okay," LeBlanc said. "I learnt so much, I've learnt so much on the ice. It's a new game at this level, the tactics and plays, there's homework with hockey now and there's a lot of things you need to know."

Helping her team to a 2nd place finish in the ACAC, LeBlanc's Coach Deanna Martin also commented on her success.

"Megan came in with a determined attitude. She put in the extra work to get better, which allowed her to fit into the Ooks with ease."

It was on the 1st of March that Leblanc would find out the news of becoming 2017-18 ACAC Women's Hockey Rookie of the Year.

"There was an award ceremony before the first game of the ACAC Championship series, and that's where I found out. It feels really good, I worked hard all year so it's nice to get rewarded."

As for her plans for next season...

"I'm looking forward to meeting the new girls next year and seeing how our team will click together, I hope we can get a championship. I'm just looking to improve on my game strategy and all the details I need to know," LeBlanc concluded.
