Youngsters interested in learning a new water sport were in the pool at the RM of Estevan Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon, as the Estevan Sharks water polo club held a free trial to encourage new participants.

"This gives a chance for kids who know nothing about water polo to come and try it out, and for parents to see what it's all about. We've done it for a few years now, and found it works great for building interest," explained Club President Melanie Dzeryk, noting that they are always looking for new talent.

"It's surprising every year, the kids that join us. We see them go from barely treading water to being the star goalie or something of the sort."

Anyone can join, no matter the skill level.

"The coaches know how to work with everybody. The first couple of months are hard because some of the kids are just learning how to swim, but by the end of the season it's amazing how far we've come, every year it's shocking," she expressed.

Looking ahead at the coming season, the club is optimistic about their performance, especially since there are quite a few familiar faces in the water.

"We've been very successful over the last few years, so with knowing that we have so many returning players, we're shooting our hopes high."
