SUBMITTED STORY:

The Provincial League finals were held in Regina this past weekend for the Atom, Bantam and Cadet players and the Sharks definitely shone in the water bringing home 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medals.  On Saturday the Estevan Cadet girls played with a team that comprised of players ranging in age from 11-15 years old.  Considering that this is a 15-16 year old league the Shark girls did a great job playing as a team and showcasing their skills as they came in second earning the club our first Silver medal for the weekend.

Sunday morning saw action from the Atom teams.  Estevan sent three Atom teams to the Atom league finals, in what proved to be a successful showing.  In Boys Division the Sharks had two teams, with Sharks 1 playing extremely well and came into the finals with 4 wins and a tie, this took them into the gold medal game against Regina Armada where they once again dominated in the water and won Gold for the tournament with a 6-5 win.  Sharks 2 played hard but as our rookie team they unfortunately lost their games in the round robin play.  In the Girls Division the Sharks played great as a team and some of our new players like Tayla Gervais and Emily Sauder really started to show off the skills they’ve gained this season.  The girls came into the semi-finals with 1 win and 2 losses but they turned the game around in their favor and with 2 great goals from Sadie Smith the Sharks beat the favored team and found themselves in the finals against Weyburn where they once again won and secured another Gold for our team.

Then on Sunday afternoon the Bantam division, the Estevan Girls team once again dominated in the pool with three straight wins that left them with a final game against Regina and the top goalie in their league.  In the final game the girls dominated right from the start and won the game 5-4.  It was an exciting finish to the season for this group of girls.   In the Bantam boys division they unfortunately were not as successful as they lost all three of their round robin games, but did come back in the semi-finals to win 4-1 against Regina and secure fourth place.  This group of boys has a lot of potential as they have a lot of young players on their team and have seen a lot of growth this season and are poised for success next year.

All Estevan Shark teams will now be travelling to Saskatoon the weekend of April 1-2 for the Spring Provincial championships.  The Estevan Sharks are funded in part through a grant from the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.
