For the first three and two-thirds innings, the Southeast Twins had the look of a potential first game spoiler at Midget AAA provincials in Estevan.

Then, the Saskatoon Diamondbacks found a bunch of grass with two outs in the 4th inning, and went on to a 12-2 win in the tournament opener.

The top-ranked Diamondbacks led just 1-0 until star player Nolan Machibroda hit a loaded bases triple to give Saskatoon a 4-0 lead.

It all unraveled from there for the Twins, with Saskatoon only needing six innings to put the game away.

Still though, the opening game will have its share of positives for the Twins, if they are able to look past one bad inning.

Southeast got on the board in the 5th inning, when Rhett Nikolejsin hit a two-run scoring double.

Burke Lyons got the start for the Twins, going 3.2 innings before coming out of the game.

Machibroda, who was named both the SPBL's Top Batter and MVP at the Opening Ceremonies, started for the Diamondbacks, pitching all six innings and striking out seven.

The Twins will look to get into the win column on Saturday morning, when they meet the Regina White Sox at 9:30.

Saskatoon takes on the Regina Wolfpack at 12:30pm.

Red Sox shortstop Jayden Huls dials in on a pitch during Muenster's 7-0 win.

The second game of the day saw the defending champion Muenster Red Sox look strong in their opener, blanking the Saskatoon Giants 7-0.

Top Pitcher Logan Hofmann started for the Red Sox, allowing only one hit over four innings pitched.

Tyler McWillie closed out the game for Muenster, also allowing just one hit.

Offensively, the Red Sox were able to find some timely hits to pull away in the game.

They took a 3-0 lead through three innings and were able to supply a balanced attack from there on.

One of the highlights of the game came at the very end when Red Sox first baseman Thomas Bollefer made a diving over the shoulder snag and then doubled up the man at third who had left his bag.

The Red Sox aim to keep their momentum going when they meet the Regina Athletics at 12:00pm on Saturday. The Giants battle the Saskatoon Cubs in the first game of the day at 9:00.

The Saskatoon Cubs (outfield) got off to a good start, defeating the Regina Athletics 9-4.

Speaking of the Cubs, they looked the part of a top team in the league in their opener against the Athletics.

Saskatoon jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game, behind a strong start from Connor Sparks.

Sparks allowed no hits in four innings pitched, with the only runner reaching on an error. He struck out seven batters before being lifted.

Offensively, Eric McNeilly had a big day for the Cubs, going 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in.

Although they did lose 9-4, a positive for the Athletics heading into Saturday would be their 4-0 run to end the game.

Regina had one run in each the 5th and 6th innings, with two runs in the 7th.

Regina White Sox pitcher Zane Pollon delivers a pitch on Friday.

The final game of the day featured the fourth and fifth ranked teams in a battle that was even throughout most of the contest.

The Regina White Sox won a battle of the Queen City, defeating the Wolfpack 7-4.

There were no runs scored until the 4th inning, when both sides put up a pair of runs.

The White Sox were able to stay hot on the bats over the next two innings, adding three runs in the 5th and two in the 6th to take a 7-2 lead.

The Wolfpack answered back with two in the 7th to end the game.

White Sox starter Zane Pollon went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs. Manuel Ramos Medina earned the win in relief.

Saturday's busy schedule will see each team play two games, with the top two finished in each pool advancing to Sunday's semi-final games.

If there are teams tied for the second spot in a pool, tiebreaker games will be played on Sunday morning.

The Opening Ceremonies on Friday featured Estevan baseball dignitaries Carl Henneberg and Greg Fieber throwing out first pitches.
