After putting out top notch medalling performances across the province all year long, the Estevan Mermaids synchronized swimming club wrapped up an impressive season with their annual show on Saturday night.

"We had a really good crowd. We always have tons of family come. It's really nice to be able to do this, because then (for) friends and family that don't normally see us compete, this is where we get to showcase what we can do," said Head Coach Brenda Lyons.

"We've had some great results at meets, but that's not the only thing. We pride ourselves in developing our athletes holistically, so teaching them about self esteem, proper nutrition, about smart for life. To me, the exciting part is seeing them develop as young ladies."

The evening saw a variety of performances from the Mini Mermaids, some duet and solo routines as well as demonstrations from the various teams. The coaches and staff were also honored for their volunteer commitments.

One graduating young swimmer, Brenna Lawrence, was celebrated for her time in the program, and presented a $250 scholarship.

"I'm happy that I got to do it for so long, but it's really hard to leave, because it's part of my life routine," she said of her long stint. Every year has had it's highlights, and now she'll head off for school in Saskatoon.

"She's an amazing kid. When we can get an athlete from age 6 or 7, and keep them till they're 18, that really warms my heart," Lyons added, "When they hit high school, a lot of times they quit because they're busy with jobs and driving and all that kind of thing. It's fantastic to be able to have such strong role models that continue swimming all through grade 12."

"It was just exciting to have our whole Mermaid family together and have our family and friends here to watch," she concluded.
