Local athletes from the ECS were in Weyburn on Wednesday to compete against the rest of the school division in the district track and field meet.

Of the 37 that made the trip to the neighboring city, 18 qualified for the provincial level in Saskatoon.

"We had some personal best performances, season bests and a variety from different events being represented including runners, throwers and jumpers, progressing on," related Head Coach Caitlyn Giesbrecht.

She noted a couple of highlights that stood out.

"Sarah Dacuycuy and Tatiana Dutka both won the top performer awards for their age categories. Sarah took the midget age category for being the top performer in her events, and Tatiana won for being the top performer in the Quad event."

The Coach noted that the latter is actually relatively new within the last couple of years for these meets. Athletes compete in four seperate events, then receive a point total at the end of the day.

"Tatiana set some new records for the track meet and was the top performer of all the quadathletes," Giesbrecht said.

"One of the biggest things that stood out to me, apart from the individual performances, was how the team supported each other. It was not an easy day to be out at track meet. There were 80 kilometer an hour winds, but still everyone was out there cheering each other on, toughing out the rain, wind and sunburns-it all happened in one day."

"To walk off with 18 people moving on to provincials, it definitely showed not only the individual talent but how much the support of teammates can really push everyone to do better," she expressed.

Giesbrecht added that they are excited about the next level, as some of the athletes will be heading in ranked quite high, and others will enter knowing that they will do well.
